James McFarlane is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, the Philadelphia Water Color Society and the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society. He has served on the Board of Directors and as president for both the Philadelphia Water Color Society and the Greater Norristown Art League. He currently serves as Secretary for the American Watercolor Society. McFarlane teaches watercolor painting at the Woodmere Museum and the Greater Norristown Art League. He conducts workshops in the Tri-State Area and New England, serves as a juror, and is a regular demonstrator and featured speaker for community groups. His paintings have been honored with numerous awards in local, regional and national shows. In October of 2002 he received the Best of Show Award from the Philadelphia Water Color Society in their 102nd International Annual Exhibition. In 2003 McFarlane was again awarded the Best of Show Award in the PWCS 103rd International Exhibition at the American College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. He was a national finalist in the Artist's magazine 1992 Annual National Art Competition, and was one of the top ten finalists in F&W Publication's 1998 National Watermedia Competition. An article he authored was published in the Fall 1999 issue of Watercolor Magic magazine and the same article was chosen to be published in the new magazine Watercolor Basics. Paintings by McFarlane have also been published in American Artists magazine, Splash III, from North Light Books, the Hazel Harrison book Watercolour in a Weekend , published by David & Charles, in the UK, in Greg Albert's book, The Simple Secrets of Better Painting, in Patricia Seligman's book Painting Light and Shade and the 2007 edition of Best of America Watercolor Artists and Artisans. McFarlane's paintings are represented in numerous private and corporate collections, including The Blue Cross, Subaru, ARA, and Spring-House Estates Corporations, The Pew Collection, The Clark Ladner Firm and the Montgomery County, PA Bar Association. McFarlane was honored to be chosen as the 1998 artist for the American Cancer Society Holiday Card Campaign. Selected to be included in Who's Who in American 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.
