Growing up in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania, Susannah Hart Thomer began her life as an artist drawing fashion designs in her backyard. She took art classes at Allens Lane Art Center and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, with her mother and high school art teacher encouraging her artistic ability. She attended Moore College of Art as a fashion design major, where she also took watercolor classes. 'I've been painting in watercolor for a long time now and still marvel at the personality of the medium,' Thomer says. 'My latest experimentation has been to try and understand contrast, and more specifically working to get the darks dark while still maintaining the flavor and texture of the medium. I like to give myself "problems" to solve which hopefully reflect ordinary subjects with an unpredictable "twist" in my work. Some succeed, others don't, but it keeps me challenged and learning.'
